Neither savant and sorcerer or the solar core book say anything about magitech being used in the way I've always assumed it was (though I may well have missed something). Savant&S says you need craft to understand the physical work, lore for the mental and occult for the essence. The artifact creation rules in the core don't mention it at all, just as a magical first age craft. Perhaps you would need magitech to make plastic essence lifts / some automata or whatever and knowing magitech would give you bonus dice to your artifact - 5 design role or something (because most higher level artifact designs/techniques are lost), but it doesn't look like you need magitech to channel essence into something...which is yey.

JD suggests magitech helps blend all the different crafts into a magical frame thingy (am sure he'll explain better)

Have you looked at Wonders of the Lost Age or the Treatises, they may be more elucidating. Of course the next book, whose name I have forgotten should contain even more information.
Craft(Magitech) did not exist in 1st ed. Craft weapons does not exist in 2nd. The whole craft system was one of the things that was overhauled for 2nd ed. I like my system of mundane and magical versions of the 5 base crafts and less anyone can persuade me otherwise, i'll pretty much be sticking to it.

Checking WotLA, you can use a relevent mundane craft to repair artefacts at +2 difficulty, but not build them.

Apart from, y'know, transport artifacts that don't fly. Of which there are lots. And some of them are also Daiklaves.

I love the fact that some of those paths have amusingly powerful effects fairly low down

Then magitech will work as the magical version of nearly all the mundane crafts won't it? Genesis is just about life stuff, so making a magical carved pipe would be magitech? Magical jewellery also magitech? Magical, fireproof house (nothing to do with earth patterns and geomancy), magitech? Heathstones and manses - geomancy, magical ink - alchemy. What about making magical alloys? Magitech because you have to heat them or alchemy because it's about mixing, or either?

And yes, magitech is way more useful than most other crafts. Fire is also quite a lot more useful than the other mundane crafts (depending on what you are crafting).

Announcement:
Having looked at some of the maths with LH I have decided to up the BP again. Instead of 100BP it will now be 160BP. Yes that is correct. 160BP.
Due to this power level I will be more harsh than ever about appropriateness and roundedness. I don't mean to come off like a bastard, but when I get sheets a lot of it is going to be "Where does that come from? Why is that there? Why isn't this on it?". It's just part of my quest for an awesome series.
