A nondescript room, it could be any meeting room in any one of a thousand administrative buildings. This one happens to look over a plaza where, far below, a fountain spouts sweet water and plays sweet music. There are two persons present, one looking out of the window, their back to the other.
“Mordant Respite seems to be settling in well.”
“Does he? Not my jurisdiction but I would be concerned about his ties to Nazri. I understand Kejak is not in the best of moods about that appointment.”
“I have reason to believe that Mistress Ura has a hand in it but she may end up getting it burnt.”
“That would be… unfortunate though I think she’s resilient enough to deal with anything on that front. But that’s your watch, not mine.”
A considered nod before a long pause.
“So, how are they?”
The seated figure ponders for a moment. “They did well. Maybe a little heavy-handed in their approach but I can smooth over most of their minor disturbances. On the whole, I think the outcome was satisfactory.”
A quirked eyebrow. “Really? They appear to have come close to discovering your little secret. How are you going to play that one down?”
A wry smile. “That is my own affair. I don’t think that they have anything more than a faint suspicion. I would be disappointed though if they weren’t capable of figuring it out eventually.”
A shrug. “As you wish. What of the conspiracy then? I understand Argent Quill got off with exile.”
“I don’t think we could have realistically expected more. At least we know now that he has friends higher up than previously suspected. I was quite impressed that they managed to get Hikari to take control of the case; there are many who would not have been quite so sympathetic.”
“And the interdiction?”
“Precaution due to standing protocol at the Division of Secrets. Her name came up in the course of the investigation. Doesn’t hurt us though. I don’t know how she fits in to all of this but it might bear looking into at some point.”
“Are you going to ask them to do that?”
“No. That wouldn’t be prudent at this stage of their development. I have something else that I think would better serve them.”
“Care to enlighten me?”
“One of the others has passed me a name which, if true, points to more corruption.”
“And what name might that be?”
“Zeran-Dubuth.”
“Oh.”
“Indeed.”
