Kairos flies through the long day, turning right, to the west, when he sees jungles encroaching on the grasslands of the east. His plan is to track the southern coast of the inland sea, staying just south of the major cities. He’ll stay a mile off the ground, beyond the distance where he thinks anybody can see him. Anybody who did would simply assume he was a blooded.
He lands slightly early that night. He has to attune to the armour he ‘accidentally’ forgot to give to Ferric, and he hasn’t slept since yesterday morning. He is not looking forward to the long journey; during which he intends to fly for 14 hours per day. He just hopes that he will be up to the task, particularly since he intends to do some summoning rituals after sundown.
On the second day he summons a jokun native to the earth court of the offended gemlord. He binds him to the task of guide. The contempt the elemental feels for Kairos is clear, but the solar refrains from using unnatural mental influence. He’s got a feeling this might backfire on him, and he’s not entirely sure as to the jokun’s ability to resist and detect such power. For now, he shall have to endure the decidedly stony silence.
On the third day, although he is weary from his travels, he summons one of the two jokun he worked with when delaying Greyfalls. He is fairly confident they have good opinions of him and he hopes they will act as his advocates to the western court. Indeed, the two jokun spend much of the next day talking in a language Kairos doesn’t quite understand and by the end of the day he seems to have been promoted to the subject of bitter dislike.
As before, he summons the other jokun he worked with; he wants this done before he hits the coast since he is not sure whether he will be able to make it to the island dwelling of the gemlord in one day via his chariot, and he would rather not reveal himself as anything other than a god-blood to the sailors he may need to hire. Steeling himself against sleep and aching muscles he begins the ritual to summon the jokun.
On the next day he crosses the mountains that border the south west and starts to turn north again. Just before sunset he sees in the distance, for the first time in his life, the Great Western Ocean, a destination he finally reaches on the 6th day of his jounrey. Here, with the judicial use of a bureaucracy excellency and some guild cant, Kairos manages to secure himself and his small entourage a place on a Guild convoy to The Coral Archipelago, where his desintation lies. The two loyal jokun will row, Kairos will do a convincing job of navigating, and the final jokun will continue to disdain him.
The ship sets sail a week after Kairos left Ferric. It is expected to take another week; long enough for Kairos to refresh his energy sufficiently to have a few goes at rowing himself. More importantly, it provides time to think what he will say to the Gemlord who, he is relatively certain, will have sworn to kill him.

The ship eventually docks at Westmoreland, one of the larger towns on the archipelago. Unfortunately, the Gemlord resides on a significantly smaller island with no Guild presence at all. Kairos is forced to negotiate with a fisherman for passage there, if by 'negotiate' we mean 'use charms to implant the belief that a deal has already been made and Kairos has, in fact, already paid'. Something the solar is careful to do when his jokun are our securing supplies.
The journey out to Fraggle Rock takes the best part of a day but Kairos is wary of using his Azure Chariot so far from home. Just before dusk they make land fall at Fraggle, the only fishing village on the island. The Mermaid's Arms -the only inn on the island - looks tempting as do the arms of several fisherman's wives. This just tells Kairos how low he's stooped. Shaking his head, he walks through the village, ignoring the stares and murmurs, as the Gemlord's Jokun leads him up to the hills.
They are still in the foothills when the jokun abrubtly disappears. Drawing his sword, Kairos sends the two loyal jokun to look for them. It doesn't take them long to report back that they are above a network of tunnels which looks fairly similar to their own mineral court. It looks like the jokun has led them as far as he's going to, and also that the element of surprise is lost.
More concerningly, Kairos's status as an eclipse caste only protects him inside elemental courts. If they ambush him before he gets inside, though, he's unlikely to escape with his life.
Kairos starts to cast Azure Chariot. It's a few seconds before he realises that it's night time.
Kairo breaks into a run.
He wills a small light into existence around him which helps him to move at his full pace. He barks orders to the jokun to travel through the nearby rocks looking for a suitable entrance. Every now and then a small hand emerges from the rock in front of him and points him in a new direction. It doesn't take long for Kairos to see what appears to be a doorway of gems glittering in the moonlight.
He's 100 feet away when he hears hoofbeats behind him. The hoofbeats are closer than he feels entirely comfortable with.
He's 50 feet away when the gems are obscured by several large, rocky forms.
He's 25 feet away when half a dozen jokun raise themselves out of the earth in front of him.
He's 13 feet away when the first Kri hits him.
Kairos' trick, though, is making sure that the Kri hits the right part of him; in this case his iron boots as he dives forward. Using Heavenly Guardian defense to protect himself, he lets the force of the blow, combined with his own momentum, carry him past the line of jokun defenders, and he lets himself roll even further when he hits the ground, eventually ending up on his back.
He can now see well enough to make out the large rocky forms directly in front of the entrance. They're what is known as '8-foot tall sons of bitches'. The jokun behind him are quickly closing the gap, and as Kairos gets to his feet he can't resist a taunt.
He gets as far as 'looks like y--' before hands emerge from the ground beneath him, pulling him back down and clamping over his mouth. Kairos can count at least 5. Fortunately, not every jokun is an enemy, and when the hands go limp Kairos shouts a quick thanks to his friends.
Of course, by now the other jokun are upon him. Kairos, still on his knees, barely has time to channel heavenly guardian defence through his shield as the first one kicks him, shattering the shield and sending him spinning through the air into the arms of 8 Foot Tall Son of a Bitch Number 1.
It saddens Kairos greatly that he won't be able to give some dramatic last words as the air is squeezed out of him. Not quite as much as it saddens him that he can't use his essence-coated words to make 8 Foot Tall Son of a Bitch Number 1 love him. Theirs would have been a passionate love, he inwardly sighs as the world starts to go fuzzy around the edges. He can see a red light approaching him, which Kairos can only assume is some sort of passage to the underworld. He wonders whether he'll get to keep his charms. Perhaps the new Lord of Thorns will give him a job? I bet *he* wouldn't let himself get bossed around by a Gemlord. Things are looking up already
Suddenly, Kairos' subconscious screams PARRY at him. It's noticed that a one-eyed Kri, still angry at the solar who put one of its eyes out with an essence-fueled iron boot to the face, is charging towards it. As Kairos concentrates his essence on his forearms to protect himself against the blow, it hits, carrying him and 8 Foot Tall Son of a Bitch Number 1 through the cave entrance, where he tumbles out of the latter's arms.
Kairos opens his eyes and looks around. He doesn't feel dead. He cranes his neck to see a bit further. Oh, yes, The Mineral Court. That's where he was going. He jumps to his feet and looks out of the cave entrance into at least a dozen angry eyes. This is all happening exactly as he planned it. That's right. There were no problems getting in at all. It's time to address the crowd.
'I am Kairos Orcos, a chosen of The Unconquered Sun, and I demand sanctuary under the terms of ancient compacts. I am here on a misson of peace and seek a meeting with your lord'. He looks into the gemstone buried into the head of one of The Kri, knowing that it serves as a Gemlord's eyes and ears. 'I made it in, but I'll have to leave at some point. The quicker you hear what I have to say the quicker I'll leave. And we both know that unless you like what I have to say then I won't make it out.'
The solar permits himself a grin as one of the kri sulks into the cave and starts leading him down some passages, before remembering the jokun who saved his life. There's no sign of them and it seems unlikely they made it.
