A couple of weeks after the deal with the salt god, the first slave caravan pulls in.
Emotions have run high in Tredemin about the news of the impending arrivals. Substantial numbers think it's a good idea. But a highly vocal contingent strongly disagrees. Many a conversation has become an argument, around the dinner tables and the bar stools of the local inhabitants.
The caravan is greeted by two large groups of residents. One cheering and whooping in support for the promised prosperity, one booing and jeering at the mere idea of having slaves. The mood turns ugly and as the slaves are unloaded some small scuffles break out.
The small presence of the royal guard prevents any serious trouble, but the bitterness is evident on many faces as the two groups are dispersed.

[can we confer here?]
As the crowds begin to gather outside the town centre, the solars arrive to watch. Kraios frowns and strokes his chin. This isn't right. There should not be anywhere near as many protesters. Azir, can you see if there is anybody aside us who's used essence on them in the last few weeks?

[Alrighty then - we can play it out here. Though my way would be much cooler.]

[what's you way? Does it involve lunars killing us all?]

[assuming it's okay to do so...]
From the shadow of a nearby doorway, Azir carefully pulls the necessary energy from his personal wellspring and wills his eyes to see beyond the threads of normality. As he scans the crowds, he whispers to Kraios, "When we're through here I'd like to speak to you in private."
[OOC: activate AESS and scan the area/people. Anything unusual? also, BSR, would you be able to see much of the town, or even just the main square, from the palace walls?]

[If I told you I'd have to have some lunars kill you.
Azir sees nothing. Charm use shows up. A compulsion effect left from a previous activation of a charm doesn't show up.
You could see it from the roof. The walls aren't high enough really.]

[Is there any other way for me to check what LH was asking, perhaps with an Occult check of some kind? Or some way to tell if they are or have been unnaturally influenced? Doubt a medicine check would do anything unless I could actively examine someone...]

[Not really. Some charms require a commitment of motes to keep the effect active. But most simply create an effect, which doesn't go away without serious effort.
There are some charms which shatter all unnatural mental influences present on a target, so presumably one could invent one that merely recognises them as well.]

Kairos looks slightly shifty. 'Would it help our future conversation if I said that our delivery is here a few days early, and I was waiting until everybody was here to tell you?'
He sighs. 'Even so, this should *not* be happening. Somebody has got to be yanking our chain. Can you see who it is?'

Azir purses his lips. "I can't see anything that would indicate immediate use of influencing power. However, if such had been used elsewhere and then the folk manipulated into being here or acting like this... I couldn't tell. Friend Fox would probably be more adept at finding that out through his contacts."
The apothecary turns to the slightly uncomfortable-looking gentleman next to him. "And possibly. But probably not for the reasons you might imagine." He turns back to the scene playing out before them. "When this dies down we can go to my shop and talk."

[Fox isn't there for the moment. Azir and Kairos are free to continue as they see fit.]

'Shall I attempt to quell the dissenters. It might prompt a response from our antagonist?'

"Unless it's by purely natural means, I'm inclined to say we stay our hands and voices. This is not a significant problem yet so I'm content to observe. A lack of response from us might force them to be a bit more obvious - the escalation effect.
"Also, if there are those watching from other forces, I would rather we didn't draw much attention to our personal actions unless we have to. The less they know about we can do, the better.
"That said, this is just my opinion." Azir's lips curl in a twisted smile, that in the shadows might be considered almost a sly smirk. "After all, I'm just a scholar of the medical not of mischief."

'No, you're right'. Kairos watches the scenes in front of him with unconcealed disgust 'It must be the lunars. There's no way your friends should have taken this long to get back here. At the moment they're more powerful than us. We'll need to play this one carefully indeed'.
He continues to stare out at the crowds, almost quivering with anger.
