I always assume that any game I enter is potentially a semi-infinite campaign. People can always leave a campaign, or draw it to a close if it seems appropriate. True - but I don't think you can have it both ways. Either there's a difference in character requirements for short-term series vs. long-term campaigns (in which case best to know from the outset), or there isn't. Your "if we're talking a genuine campaign, rather than say a series" made me think you were suggesting the former, but now you seem to be suggesting the latter IMO, there definitely is a difference - because as you pointed out, a longer-term thing is much more likely to branch out from the central theme / tone / premise. So in a long-term thing I'll make a more rounded character, and be happier in a bigger, more rounded party, whereas in a short-term thing my character and the party can afford to be more focussed (but will therefore risk serious overlap if there's a big party). Therefore personally I think it's worth knowing before chargen so that characters, groups and group sizes can be chosen accordingly. [This is a part of my general view that we ought to spend more time before RP endeavours tailoring the characters & campaigns to each other. Full rant available on request, but I won't clutter the internet with it ]

You are so right about the designing characters together thing. i always get too excited and just make one anyway. As for the other thing, I guess I see what you mean. Though for me it's basically one-off (or three parter in many cases ) or campaign. i'm not sure how different i would get for a medium length series type thing...

Well I'm not averse to (prob would even actively encourage) you all getting together while I'm away to hash out where your chars would complement, mitigate overlaps and decide what your various specialities lie/are. That would also help me know what sort of style / focus to write for.
Just so you're all aware I'm away October 9th - 27th (back early on the 28th).
